Sate Iboe Sarongan Tanah Djawa & Bali, In the old days, in remote villages in Bali & Java, a colorful satay parade of village vendors would take place every evening. The women from the village would put on their best sarong and kebaya with baskets of satays slung on their backs, and walking down to the evening markets or the squares, they would sing flirtatiously, so that their customers would get hooked and would only buy from them. Later on, these women and their satays were then known and identified by the batik sarong (also known as 'sewek') they wore. At the end of the night after the market, the vendors would count the number of the satays sold and gave 'commission' to the 'satay mafia boss', usually the male supplier that led each group. This parade of the Sate Ibu Sarongan is now part of the forgotten history of Indonesia and is only brought back to life now by the Tugu group. |
